Entry Requirements
The SSSTS course is open to anyone currently working in, or moving into, a supervisory role within the construction and civil engineering sectors. As the training and final exam are conducted in English, a basic level of spoken and written proficiency is required.
For those choosing our SSSTS course online, you will simply need a stable internet connection and a device equipped with a working camera and microphone. On the first day of your course, please have a valid form of photo ID ready to verify your CITB registration.
SSSTS Assessment & Certification
To successfully complete the CITB SSSTS course and receive your accredited certificate, full attendance over both training days is mandatory, followed by a passing score on the final assessment.
The Exam: A 30-minute assessment consisting of 25 questions. This includes 22 multiple-choice questions (incorporating 4 mandatory safety-critical questions) and 3 short written-answer questions.
Pass Mark: The pass mark is 80% (24 out of 30 total marks). However, you must answer all 4 safety-critical multiple-choice questions correctly to pass the course, regardless of your overall score.
Certificate: You will receive your results on the same day. Your official digital CITB SSSTS Certificate will be issued via the CITB portal within 5–10 working days. Please note this is a certificate of achievement, not a physical card; it serves as the essential training prerequisite for your CSCS Gold Supervisor Card application.
Validity: Your qualification is valid for 5 years. To maintain your supervisor status, you must complete a one-day SSSTS Refresher course before your current certificate expires. If it expires, you will be required to retake the full 2-day course.

Common Questions
Is the SSSTS course certificate delivered as a physical card?
No. The CITB issues a digital SSSTS certificate of achievement, not a physical card. This certificate serves as the mandatory evidence of safety knowledge required to apply for your CSCS Gold Supervisor Card.
How much does the SSSTS course cost?
The SSSTS course price varies based on the delivery method. Remote Zoom classes are the most cost-effective option. Prices generally range between £250 and £400, including VAT and CITB registration fees.
What happens if I fail the SSSTS exam?
If you fail the assessment but achieve a score of at least 72%, you may be eligible for a same-day resit. If your score falls below this threshold, you must retake the entire two-day course.
Can I take the SSSTS course online?
Yes. You can complete the SSSTS course online via a Live Virtual Classroom (Zoom). This carries the same CITB accreditation as our physical training centres.
Does the SSSTS certificate expire?
The qualification is valid for 5 years. You must pass the one-day SSSTS Refresher course before your current certificate expires. If it lapses by even one day, you must retake the full 2-day course.
Is there a difference between SSSTS and SMSTS?
Yes. The SSSTS is for supervisors, while the SMSTS is a 5-day course designed for site managers. The SSSTS is often the first step before progressing to the SMSTS.

The CITB Site Supervision Safety Training Scheme (SSSTS) is a two-day programme for construction site supervisors and team leaders. It provides a formal qualification in health and safety legislation, legal duties, and the supervisory skills required to manage a safe site.
No. The CITB does not issue a physical SSSTS card. Once you pass, you receive a digital CITB SSSTS Certificate. This document is the mandatory evidence of safety training required to apply for a CSCS Gold Supervisor Card. To get the physical card, you must also complete a Level 3 NVQ.
While not written into law, the SSSTS certificate is a mandatory requirement for most major UK contractors and site owners. It is the industry-recognised minimum standard for anyone supervising workers on a construction project.
The SSSTS certificate provides the mandatory theoretical knowledge for the Gold Card. However, to obtain the physical CSCS Gold Supervisor Card, you must hold this certificate and successfully complete a Level 3 NVQ in Occupational Work Supervision.
The exam is rigorous, but our expert instructors ensure you are fully prepared. The 30-minute assessment consists of 25 questions: 22 multiple-choice (which include 4 mandatory safety-critical questions) and 3 short written-answer questions. To pass, you must achieve a total score of 80% (24 out of 30 marks) and correctly answer all 4 safety-critical MCQs. If you score between 72% and 77% and pass the safety-critical section, you may be eligible for a same-day resit. If your score falls below 72% or if you fail the safety-critical questions, the CITB requires you to retake the full two-day course.
Yes. You can complete the SSSTS course online via a live, tutor-led virtual classroom (Zoom). This remote option offers the same CITB accreditation and curriculum as our physical training centres without travel or accommodation costs.
SSSTS (2 days) is for supervisors and focuses on site-level safety briefings. SMSTS (5 days) is for site managers and project leads, covering high-level health and safety legislation and project-wide planning.

The qualification is valid for 5 years. You must pass the one-day SSSTS Refresher course before your current certificate expires. If it lapses by even one day, you must retake the full two-day course to remain qualified.
