Fire Marshal vs Fire Warden: What’s the Difference?
In many UK workplaces, the terms 'fire marshal' and 'fire warden' are used interchangeably. Both usually refer to an appointed person who helps support workplace fire safety, including fire prevention, evacuation procedures and helping people leave the premises safely during an emergency.
Some employers divide the responsibilities differently between fire marshals and fire wardens, but there is no single standard distinction between the two job titles that applies to every workplace. The exact duties should reflect the organisation’s fire risk assessment, emergency procedures and the responsibilities assigned by the person responsible for fire safety.
Is Fire Warden Training a Legal Requirement?
Not every workplace is legally required to appoint someone with the job title “fire warden”. However, employers and other Responsible Persons must provide appropriate fire safety arrangements, information and training, and may need to appoint competent people to assist with fire safety duties depending on the workplace and its fire risk assessment.
Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, the Responsible Person must take appropriate fire precautions, provide employees with suitable fire safety training and, where necessary, nominate competent people to help implement fire-fighting and evacuation measures.
In practice, many organisations appoint trained fire wardens or fire marshals to help meet these responsibilities. The number required and the duties assigned will depend on factors such as the size and layout of the premises, the number of occupants, working patterns and the findings of the fire risk assessment.
On-Site Fire Marshall Training for Groups
Need to train several employees? Fire Marshal and Fire Warden training can be delivered on-site at your workplace, making it easier to train teams together without staff travelling to a training centre.
On-site training takes approximately 3 hours and can be arranged for businesses and organisations across the UK. Training can be delivered around your team's requirements, with successful learners receiving the same CPD certificate as other delivery options.
