SIA Refresher Course (Top-Up Training) for Door Supervisors
Available since 1 October 2024, the two-day SIA Refresher Course for Door Supervisors is required for renewing your SIA licence and has replaced the previous Top-Up training.
The refresher training helps door supervisors update their skills in essential safety areas and provides current information on spiking and terror threat awareness. This course replaces the previous Top-Up Door Supervisor course.

Who Needs to Take this New SIA Refresher Course?
If you have completed the six-day Door Supervisor course or the older top-up training within the last three years and need to renew your SIA door supervisor licence, you are required to take this new SIA Refresher Training for Door Supervisors.

Entry Requirements for the SIA Refresher Course
To be eligible for the Door Supervisor Top-Up Refresher Training, you must have held an SIA licence within the last 3 years and have sufficient English skills in reading, writing, speaking, and listening.
First Aid Requirement for the Door Supervisor Refresher Training
Before attending the SIA Refresher Training for Door Supervisors, it is mandatory to have completed and passed an Emergency First Aid qualification. If you already hold an Emergency First Aid certificate, ensure it is valid for a minimum of 12 months from the start date of your course.

Renewing Your SIA Door Supervisor Licence
To renew your SIA Door Supervisor licence, you must first complete the SIA Refresher Training for Door Supervisors. After passing the refresher course, visit the SIA website to renew your licence. Since 1 April 2026, the SIA licence renewal fee is £204, and you can expect to receive your new badge in approximately 25 working days.

The training covers appropriate actions to take during a terror threat, procedures for handling suspicious items, and recognising behaviors that may indicate suspicious activity, along with effective responses to such behaviors.
Safeguarding the public from incidents of spiking
You will learn about methods of spiking, relevant laws, and indicators of tampered drinks. The training includes recognising behavioral signs of potential spikers, high-risk situations, and preventive measures for door supervisors and venues. Participants will also identify signs that someone may have been spiked and how to manage a spiking incident effectively.
Implications of physical interventions and their use
You will learn the legal and professional implications of using force, explore positive alternatives, and distinguish between defensive physical skills and physical interventions.
Risks associated with using physical intervention
You will identify key risk factors involved in using force, recognise signs of acute behavioral disturbance (ABD) and psychosis, and understand the specific dangers of positional asphyxia and prolonged physical interventions.
Reducing the risks associated with physical intervention
You will learn about the risks of ground incidents and effective management strategies. The training covers minimising harm, the benefits of dynamic risk assessment, monitoring safety during interventions, and the responsibilities of all involved, both during and after an intervention, emphasising the importance of maintaining knowledge and skills.
Using physical skills to protect yourself and others
You will demonstrate effective stance and positioning techniques, skills for evading and defending against blows, and methods for disengaging from grabs. The training also covers non-aggressive intervention methods to prevent assaults and emphasises the importance of maintaining professional communication during physical interventions.
Using standing, holding and escorting techniques safely
You will learn to demonstrate safe physical prompting and low-level non-restrictive holds for escorting individuals. The training covers low-level restrictive holds, transitions between disengagement and escorting techniques, safe escorting on stairways, and effective methods for safe disengagement and immediate risk management afterward.
