The Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement (CAVA) is a practical course that teaches you the necessary skills to assess learners' workplace competency and vocational knowledge within educational settings. You will be a fully qualified assessor in your specialised field upon completion.
The CAVA qualification teaches you how to evaluate and oversee a learner's vocational skills. After completing the course and gaining occupational competence, you will be qualified to conduct assessments for learners working towards NVQs or apprenticeships.
Unit 1 – Principles and Practices of Assessment
Unit 2 – Assessing Occupational Competence in Work Environments
Unit 3 – Assessing Vocational Skills, Knowledge, and Understanding
While the average completion time for candidates is 2-3 months, you’re allowed up to 12 months to finish the course, ensuring you have all the time you need. During this period, the course is assessed through written and practical assignments you complete and upload for grading on our online portal.
To conduct assessments for this qualification, you must have access to a physical workplace or classroom setting. This is because the qualification is competency-based, meaning you must demonstrate practical skills and knowledge in a real-world environment.
This course is assessed in two different ways:
Unit 1: You will complete written assignments demonstrating your understanding of the theory.
Units 2 & 3: You will upload evidence of your assessments, including plans, records, and feedback. You need to assess at least two learners to build your evidence portfolio.
You should have math and English skills at a Level 2 standard. As part of the course requirements, you must arrange to assess two learners. This involves evaluating their performance and gathering evidence for your portfolio. An expert witness must also observe you. This expert witness is a qualified assessor within an organisation who will verify that your work was conducted correctly.
Previously known as the A1 assessor course and the D32/D33 assessor courses, the CAVA is the current and updated qualification required for full assessor certification. Despite occasional confusion, it is distinct from the TAQA course. TAQA refers to a suite of qualifications and is not a standalone qualification.
The CAVA qualification is preferred because it covers all units (1,2,3) for assessing students across different environments.
The CAVA course is a Level 3 certificate. Among the three official assessor qualifications at Level 3, each serves a distinct purpose: one focuses on workplace assessment, and another on assessment in educational settings.
CAVA uniquely qualifies assessors to evaluate learners in both workplace and educational environments.
Studying the concepts and principles of assessment in this course upholds the VACSR principles—Valid, Authentic, Sufficient, Current, and Reliable—to confirm complete fairness and accuracy in assessment processes.
IQA Award Unit 1: The 1-unit IQA course offers theoretical knowledge on internal quality assurance without practical qualification.
IQA Award Unit 1 & 2: This Level 4 award provides learners with the opportunity to develop their skills, knowledge and understanding of internal quality assurance. Once completed, learners are able to perform the role of an internal quality assurer.
Lead IQA Certificate Unit 1, 2 & 3: The Level 4 Certificate in Leading Internal Quality Assurance is the most advanced course within the TAQA qualification suite and covers all three units of an IQA course.
Level 3 Assessor Award (UPPA) Unit 1: This unit focuses on knowledge and is excellent for current assessors who want to improve their skills. It teaches the background knowledge and importance of assessment practices.
Level 3 Assessor Award (AVRA) Unit 1 & 2: This qualification allows you to assess students in a training setting, like a workshop or classroom, but not in their workplace.
Level 3 Assessor Award (ACWE) Unit 1 & 2: This qualification lets you assess students at their workplace rather than in a classroom. Like the Vocationally Related Achievement award, you will determine the skills of two learners.

Yes, you do require an expert witness for this course. An expert witness is a qualified assessor within an organisation who verifies that your assessments were conducted correctly before your course tutor grades them.
If you refer on an assessment, your tutor will give you detailed feedback to help you understand where you need to improve. You will revise your work based on this feedback and submit an improved version.
Generally, candidates take 2-3 months to complete the course, yet you have up to 12 months to do so, giving you plenty of time to finish. Please note that after these 12 months, additional fees will apply.
